IPMI

Specification Version 0.9 Available Now!

Intel and leading server vendors, Dell, Hewlett-Packard and NEC are pleased to announce a new management specification for Intel architecture-based servers intended to enhance server management and drive down the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). IPMI defines a common interface and protocol for platform management hardware, which monitors server characteristics such as temperature, voltage, fans, power supplies, and chassis. See IPMI press announcement for additional information.

IPMI is comprised of three specifications: Intelligent Platform Management Interface, Intelligent Platform Management Bus (IPMB) and Intelligent Chassis Management Bus (ICMB). The IPMI specification defines the interface to platform management hardware, the IPMB specification defines the internal management bus, and the ICMB specification defines the external management bus for connecting additional IPMI-enabled systems.

Intel, Dell, HP and NEC invite the industry to review version 0.9 of the IPMI specification and provide feedback. IPMI version 1.0, which will include industry feedback, is anticipated to be available late Q2 ’98. All feedback will be carefully tracked, evaluated and incorporated as appropriate, however there is no guarantee that feedback will be included in the final release of the specifications.
